Flow 3D flow analysis of die casting shot process

FLOW ANALYSIS

Our engineers can provide state of the art flow analysis services. We utilize Flow 3D software, which performs Finite Volume Analysis for your project.

Mesh construction can be created from CAD models of a die or part, or we can create a CAD model by reverse engineering existing dies and even existing parts. From there, modeling and analysis of metal flow through the full casting process including pouring, shot, and die fill are all performed and perfected.

From there, the metal flow in your die casting process can be optimized for quality and efficiency. Then, we can identify improvement opportunities to minimize porosity and cold shunts, balance flow for multiple cavity dies, and perform temperature analysis for die cooling designs.

Some of the process parameters we can analyze include:

  • Pour speed - How fast the metal is poured into the shot sleeve influences the amplitude and magnitude of the fluid waves.

  • Shot sleeve diameter and length - as metal is poured, the shot sleeve design influences any reflected waves.

  • Shot volume - the amount of metal poured must be sufficient to robustly fill the die cavities.

  • Shot initiation timing - the timing of the shot start is critical and has many interactions.

  • Shot speed – verification and optimization of shot profile for best die fill.
